Major new research will examine how artificial intelligence might play a role in future

Major new research will examine how artificial intelligence might play a role in future for teaching, learning and the State exams.

Artificial intelligence (AI) will need to be incorporated into redeveloped Leaving Cert subjects so students are examined on how they use the technology, according to a leading academic expert.
New Leaving Cert reforms coming into effect from September will see students carry out research and projects before exams to earn up to 40pc of their marks, but it remains to be seen how AI will be incorporated into the reforms.

All subjects will be redeveloped by 2029 as part of a transition towards more continuous assessment.

Teachers worry the new assessments could enable students to pass off digitally generated material as their own work.

Trinity College school of education professor Damian Murchan, who is president of the Association for Educational Assessment Europe, said there is no point ignoring the technology.
